August 25th, 2010

red quinoa, exellent cucumbers from the farmer's market, a few yellow grape tomatoes, tiny bit of olive oil, lemon juice, parsely, salt and pepper

a few good books:

Fifth Avenue, 5 A.M.: Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and the Dawn of the Modern Woman      interesting insight into the times and the movie making business

No Way Down: Life and Death on K2    who cares about a life without toes if you've made it to the top of K2!!??

Everything: A Novel   liked it a lot...sad, but I like sad     love most of Kevin Canty's stuff

tomatoes
August 22nd, 2010

love 'em... been wanting to make this tomato risotto for a while now:

starts with roasting tomatoes

used veg stock (from last summer), rose cause it was there (instead of white wine), and to the right are the chopped roasted tomatoes

did not use everything called for (no butter, no mascarpone)...still delicious

since the peppers looked great at the farmer's market, made baked peppers with tomatoes and anchovies

used boquerones in the red peppers and regular salty/oil packed anchovies in the green peppers

haven't tried them yet...

thanks Cavan
August 19th, 2010

It was Cavan the Intern's last day today...

I wanted to bake something for her, but didn't manage to do that... plus rumor had it that it was all about the icing, so I whipped up two batches for her, peanut butter and chocolate:

boxes from nashville wraps

and some lunch for me (interested in where I, or any vegetarian, might get protien? 2 containers of plain non-fat yogurt by siggis = 34 grams of protien)...was inspired by this recipe, but left out the cottage cheese

ugly but delicious

a break from taxes
August 17th, 2010

took time out from long overdue tax paperwork during the weekend to make spaghetti with cherry tomato sauce (I used slightly larger tomatoes).  this brand of spaghetti is excellent.

had "fresh" parmesan...

and pecorino

also got zephyr squash from the farmer's market last week...sliced very thin and dressed (raw) with the cheese, olive oil and lemon juice: delicious

I just winged it, but here is a recipe from martha's website and one from "the kitchn"

pasta with cherry tomatoes and arugula

then forgot to take photo of "finished product" till the next day

a little sad from the fridge:

martha's birthday cake and party favors
August 4th, 2010

creamsicle cake (it was a hit! was worried no one would like it, but they seemed to)

I am trying to figure out where I found the recipe... printed it out but don't have the source...will keep trying to find it and will then post

placing first half layer in sprinform pan before brushing with syrup and covering with mousse...worked perfectly - cake shrinks just enough during baking to fit inside with room around edges for mousse

placing second layer on top

ready for fridge

unmolded without incident (placed hot towels around cake for a minute or two before running thin knife around edge and then loosening pan)

the candle was mine, but the presentation was a la Jean Georges ABC Kitchen (the decor is not to my taste - the food was excellent!!!)

(forgot to take picture of slices - probably on martha's blog)

party favors/backup dessert:

finally remembered trick of laying out tops and refrigerating day before assembly...makes everything so much easier

half were blueberry, the other half raspberry

just winged the filling - flour, sugar and a pinch of salt

used cream cheese crust (so easy to work with)

and brushed tops with cream and sprinkled with "sanding sugar"

last scrap of dough made a strawberry jam snack

furniture for balconies
August 1st, 2010

martha "loaned" me her collection of Walter Lamb outdoor furniture for the balconies at my apartment

pasta with zucchini and mint (faella brand pasta available here)

be sure and add a little of the pasta water so it doesn't get too dry

could't resist the okra at the farmer's market

just winged it and used what was around and added dried hot pepper flakes martha and kevin brought back from Turkey

not as "tomatoey" as I'd have liked, but delicious none the less

was meant to go to Maine this weekend but couldn't make it... had made an apricot snow cone mixture to take up with me, but it will have to wait for another weekend

there was an article about them in the ny times a few weeks ago...was going to make the cafe con leche ones as well

froze them in these larger containers - could be used as syrup on top of the shaved ice or frozen again in cube trays and put directly through the shaver

almost finished listening to Shades of Grey - got much better about 1/3 of the way through (or I simply became less confused by the story)... saving the last bit for tomorrow

also read Double Happiness - really good stories

a few more pages left of Jane Smiley's Private Life - enjoyed it a lot... one of those "slow" books about America in the early 1900's
