Kevin’s in the house

Jennifer wasn’t on the show today. Kevin Sharkey was filling in for her. Alexis and Kevin discussed when they might go horseback riding. Kevin complained about the pillow he had up at Martha’s house (he had his own apartment/carriage house). Alexis complained about these two hideous Chinese statues that Kevin had in his NYC apartment. The statues cost $22,000. Alexis couldn’t quite believe that he bought these statues. Kevin thought traveling was dangerous because you thought something was so amazing and then when you got it home it looked like crap. Kevin hated pottery more than anything…except for maybe wicker.  He also noted that craftspeople really needed art direction. In Turkey, Kevin was going to commission four or five big platters with Arabic writing on it. He and Martha then started coming up with words. They had a guy draft all of these things but when Kevin found out they’d be $600 each he cancelled the whole order.

Belgium

Wall Street Journal staff reporter John Miller called into the show. The girls and he discussed a well-to-do community in the outskirts of Brussels called Wemmel, where most of the families were French-speaking but the law for the region said that all official town business must be conducted in Flemish. Alexis then asked what was going on with the Tour de France. John said no one cared because Lance was losing and Lance just looked really really tired. He said there were a couple young guys that were exciting to watch, though.

Adventures in babysitting

Kevin had 2 Godchildren that he wanted to set a good example for. He wanted them to grow up to be decent people. When he babysat them, he didn’t really let them watch TV. He had a big basket of ping pong balls. He threw them on the floor when they weren’t looking and they just went ballistic. He also brought them to the pier across the street. They ran back and forth until someone fell. Alexis said she read something that said if you wanted your children to be more creative you had to travel. Kevin and Alexis didn’t think this was true. Kevin said he traveled with his family all the time but his brother was as dumb as a box of rocks. Michael used to babysit in college but he felt like a big disappointment because he wasn’t fun or cool. Kevin made forts when kids were little. Paulie thought that forts were always fun.

San Francisco relationship

There was a study of gay male couples from the Bay area that concluded that 47% of them had open relationships. Kevin said all men cheated. They just thought about sex differently than women did. Alexis and Kevin discussed whether men could be monogamous. Kevin said gay men didn’t feel like they had to be monogamous. Christina’s brother was gay and she said he had the same idea Kevin had – that it was a free-for-all. There was a loneliness that came with it. Rich in Boston said not all gay guys were unfaithful.

What’s your problem?

Kevin and Alexis counseled a guy who’s boyfriend cheated on him and left to go on a business trip and never came back. Another caller’s husband used to drive 2 hours to go to a gay barber that he was in the military with. She told him he was acting weird and she kicked him out. Kevin and Alexis were convinced the guy was gay.

Levi and Bristol were getting married.

Kevin couldn’t believe anyone would care that they were getting married. Alexis thought Bristol might improve with age but she wasn’t sure about Levi.
