Product endorsement

Katie Perry was endorsing ProActiv. Alexis couldn’t figure why she was promoting it. She didn’t think she needed the money. Alexis said all of the ProActiv in the world wasn’t going to do anything and she didn’t think Katie Perry even used it. Alexis always questioned celebrity endorsements. Jennifer didn’t buy things just because a celebrity was endorsing it. Alexis said at least with weight loss products you could see whether the celebrity actually lost weight or not.

Blind eye

Brendan Nyhan, a political scientist currently serving as a RWJ Scholar in Health Policy Research at the University of Michigan called into the show to discuss people in politics believing things that were untrue and their inability to admit they are wrong. He said sometimes when people were told they were wrong they held even tighter to their initial belief. The girls and he discussed people’s emotions and how they ruled over seemingly obvious truths.

Payback

Alexis and Jennifer discussed Constance McMillan, the lesbian who wasn’t allowed to go to her prom with another girl. Her school had to pay her $35,000 in damages and adopt a policy that prohibited discrimination for sexual orientation. Jennifer wondered if the settlement would do any good. Alexis thought the policy was good but didn’t understand why the girl had to be paid. Jennifer thought it was a nice thing for her to be compensated for all that she went through. Alexis said money never fixed things like this so she just didn’t understand the point of the settlement. Alexis said everyone in the community was going to have to pay for this and not everyone in the school district was guilty.

So long Shirley

Shirley Sherrod, the USDA’s director of rural development in Georgia, recently gave a speech to the NAACP that made her sound anti-white. She was then forced to resign from her job and labeled a racist by the conservative blog that was the source that originally posted an edited version of the speech. The girls played the speech in its entirety. Shirley’s point was that in 1986 she directed a white farmer to a white lawyer because she had a bias. Jennifer didn’t have a problem with the story or the speech. Alexis didn’t have a problem with the story, but she didn’t like the way Sherrod told the story. She didn’t like that Sherrod said she sent the farmer to “his own kind.” Jennifer said the issue was that the video was taken out of context and posted on a conservative website.  Alexis just didn’t like the woman. Jennifer thought the speech was an example of Sherrod’s growth. Callers were split on the issue.

1000 guys

There was an English woman in the news recently who said she slept with 1000 guys over a period of ten years. Her motivation to do this was the Samantha character on Sex in the City. Jennifer asked if people thought the girl was slutty for doing this. Alexis thought it was stupid and jokingly wondered if the woman was going to write a book called “Eat, Pray, Shtupp.”

On a break

Bombshell: Paulie and Bertha were supposedly on a break! Jennifer didn’t understand how Paulie didn’t tell them about it until now. Paulie said he’d talk about it on the show tomorrow.
